about Moi & Kijana....
Hi, my name is Leah Holmes and I have a Bachelor of Health Science degree, Naturopathy. I have three amazing children, two dogs and a horse. We are originally from Sydney but are currently enjoying life here in beautiful Brisbane. I have had many careers over the years from costume designer for a small children's theatre in Sydney, making kids clothes and selling them at markets with a friend, made and sold herbal teas , worked in retail, was a receptionist for ophthalmologists and a real estate. But I think the biggest career change is that I have been a dog groomer for 20 years! I love animals, especially dogs, and am amazed at how naturopathy has helped me with the health of my animals as well as my family. But now it's time to focus on people as I have a passion for helping others on their health journey. I like to refer to myself as a non-cheesecloth wearing hippy who mixes science with the spiritual. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you. What does Kijana mean? Kijana means teenager in Swahili. My Grandfather used to say "Slow down Leah, I don't understand a word you're saying. It's like you're speaking Swahili!!". And as my passion is helping teens, Kijana seems to fit perfectly. Leah xox |
Why I chose Naturopathy
There used to be a lot more of me a few years ago and I was unwell. Like most people who decide to go into a medical field it is from personal experience, either your own or someone close to you. I had an unhealthy relationship with food and a very negative self image that led me to not treat my body as the temple it is. Alright, I also loved bread, and bread products and cakes and biscuits and chocolate and bread, did I mention bread?? However too much of a good thing and I triggered my coeliac disease, so the bread and I have to love each other from afar. I also have experience with mental health as a previous sufferer of anxiety and depression from my teenage years through to adulthood. I'm happy to say, after a very long journey I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel and can't wait to help others on their journey. I promise to tell my weight loss story in one of my blog posts with hints and tips on how you too can have a love affair with food that is good for you and share my journey through the dark nights of depression to be the happy and confident woman I am today. |
My health passion
As with doctors there are lots of areas of specialties in naturopathy. Some naturopaths are passionate about fertility, some are sports nutrition experts, others are like a GP and love to do a little bit of everything. I have a love of the science behind how the human body works alongside a curiosity around the energetics and spirituality of life. I like to practice what I have the most experience with and am especially passionate about mental health. I have a desire to help teenagers navigate their transitions from young child reliant on their parents to independent young adults making their journey through the hormonal storm that is called puberty! I believe open discussions about the hormones teens are bombarded with will help you understand that emotional states are fluid. You may be feeling completely crappy one day and think it will never get better and the next day you and your best friend are having a laugh. Through education of the impact of nutrition and open discussions about ever changing emotions, teens will grow up empowered and strong. |
